St Mary’s is…

the mother church of the ancient and extensive parish of Watford which was divided from the middle of the Victorian period into several parishes.

The date of the first church/chapel on this site is not known exactly, but it can be said with some certainty that for upwards of 800 years Christian worship has taken place here. No part of the existing building, however, dates from earlier than 1230. It is thought that William of Trumpington, who was Abbot of St Albans (1230-35) was the founder.

St Mary’s is in fact one of the largest churches in Hertfordshire and is certainly Watford’s most ancient remaining building. The parts of the 1230 structure (Early English style of architecture) which remain are the chancel arch and adjacent walls, the south arcade of the nave (columns and arches), the double piscina in the chancel and the former doorway over the pulpit, which gave access to the Rood loft.

The church contains many fascinating historical and architectural features, befitting of a church of its size and age. If you are interested in knowing more or would like a tour of the church please contact the church office.
